Science at Barlows

The National Curriculum 2014 for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

At Barlows Primary School our vision in science is to encourage curiosity in our children through practical hands on experiences so that they ask questions that ignite explorations and investigations about the universe we live in. Our aim is that these stimulating and challenging experience will help our children to secure and extend their scientific knowledge and expose them to rich subject specific vocabulary.

We follow the Hamilton’s science scheme which uses hands-on investigative science activities to promote a deep understanding of scientific concepts and help children develop effective methods of scientific enquiry.

Hamilton’s science planning is arranged to take advantage of seasonal study opportunities and to ensure progression in scientific working skills, while covering the National Curriculum for England. Each year is comprised of 6 blocks of 6 sessions dedicated to one of the science areas and culminating in a meaningful outcome. Opportunities for children to meet the full range of scientific investigative approaches entail pattern seeking, exploring, problem solving, fair testing, and analysing secondary sources.

In EYFS, science is not taught as a specific subject but is a key part of the Knowledge and Understanding of the World area of the curriculum. It is also integral to many areas of daily exploration, learning and play. Alongside specific scientific knowledge and vocabulary, children in EYFS develop the concept of ‘working scientifically’ appropriate to their developmental stage.
