PSHE at Barlows
Our PSHE Curriculum has been recently developed to ensure that pupils learn about, explore and challenge one another on modern day topics. As a community school, we believe it is important to educate our pupils about local and global community issues. Therefore, the start of the Autumn term begins with a community focus. As pupils progress through the school, they develop their knowledge and understanding of key global environmental issues as we understand that they will be the next generation to take on issues concerning our planet.
Educating pupils about the diverse range of communities that make up not only the city of Liverpool, but the UK as a whole, features across all year groups. Through this, we explore different family make-ups, diversity within a community, equality and respect.
Weaving through our PSHE curriculum is developing knowledge and understanding of what are known as Fundamental British Values:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without a faith
Having consulted with parents and carers during the summer term of 2019, we have included a stand on Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) across all year groups from Reception to Year 6 within our PSHE curriculum. Stakeholders agreed on the importance of educating pupils at Barlows in RSE, as it further develops the knowledge pupils have in keeping themselves safe and understanding the changes they are going through. RSE is taught across all year groups during the first half of the summer term. As a school, we use the Christopher Winter Project materials to aid delivery of RSE in all year groups.
